BUY A DONKEY FOR A NEEDY FAMILY - ANNOUNCEMENT
We shall very shortly be reaching the hundredth donkey on our donkey project, Donkeys for Needy Families. This is a genuine scheme and is not just a fundraising exercise and we do want to ensure that the donkeys which have been purchased are well cared for and supervised. We realize that at our present staff capacity we will need to enlist and train more people before we can let the project expand any further, so we are calling a temporary halt to the purchase of donkeys.
If you would still like to donate to this scheme, there are several options:
- You could give money towards a cart or plough - You could give money for maintaining or staffing the project - If you want to give something as a gift, you could make a donation and still receive a certificate, even for a donkey, but it must be on the understanding that there may be quite a long wait before YOUR donkey actually goes out. - If you have already made a donation online, or sent a cheque for a donkey, we would of course prefer you to take one of the above options, but we will, of course, refund the money if that is your wish.
This is a genuine project using REAL donkeys for REAL families and we have already had donors going out to The Gambia to see their donkeys and meet their families. In addition to being valuable to their families, these donkeys provide a valuable platform for our staff who use them as 'demonstration models' in their communities when they go to visit, and they are proving to be as valuable an asset to us in our teaching as they are to their new families.
It is essential that we create a sound infrastructure for the running and management of the project before we expand it, and any help you could give us with donations for maintaining and running the project and training new staff in order to extend it, rather than for actual donkeys, would be very welcome.
THE BALL
There will be another fundraising ball at Hickstead this year, so please mark the 15th September, 2007, in your diaries. The Hickstead Events team will be handling all the ticket sales and their details will be announced shortly. There will be healthy discounts for early booking. We should have the details very soon.
If anyone can provide raffle or auction prizes, or has any suggestions as to whom we could approach for them, we would love to hear from you!
RSPCA
Thanks to a grant from the RSPCA Colwyn Bay Branch we were able to build day stables for animals visiting the GHDT. The building has been much admired. It is very cool and provides welcome respite for sick animals that have travelled considerable distances for treatment. A picture of the stable can be seen on the website at:
BRITISH VETERINARY ASSOCIATION
The British Veterinary Association have very kindly donated four microscopes for the use of our students. One will go up to our laboratory and the other three will go to The Gambia College to benefit the students who we hope to place there in September if sufficient funds can be raised.
MORAG
Morag, one of the first donkeys to be purchased for our 'donkeys for needy families', by Mr. and Mrs Raeside from Scotland, has given birth to a little colt foal. He will stay with his mother until he is old enough to work and will then be given out to a new family. The first foal that arrives has to be passed on, but subsequent foals can be kept by the family who cares for the donkey as by then we shall be confident that they are good and responsible owners.
SURGICAL INSTRUMENTS
If anyone has a particularly good relationship with their vet, we were wondering if you could ask them if they have any surgical instruments that they no longer use please? With our expanding training scheme for veterinary assistants, we are looking for instruments to enable us to teach them simple surgical procedures.
